I have used some of it lately to re-read Tolstoy's splendid WAR AND PEACE which I am convinced is the finest historical novel ever written. There are two big issues with this translation, depending on where you're sitting. After reading their 2007 translation of War and Peace, Orlando Figes, the eminent Russian historian, did not mince words about Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. War-and-peace-maude Although Brigg's translation is excellent, I am most familiar with the Maude translation. The list would have been a little more helpful if they had included the publisher The Pevear and Volokhonsky translations of Tolstoy's works, they say, goes a long way in diminishing the intimidation factor of Leo Tolstoy. It's a little strange to see War and Peace at 50 and no Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment in sight given they're generally the more popular translated texts. Has anyone read the My favorite War & Peace translation is the one by Pevear & Volokhonsky. Pevear and Volokhonsky include all the French, with pages of footnotes. Using several examples from Tolstoy's War and Peace, the author gives the reader a whole new look and appreciation into the world of a translator. Over the past few weeks, there's been an ongoing discussion of the new Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace in the NY Times Reading Room. I am no expert on the subject of course, but would like to perhaps read War and Peace again at christmas time. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,273-page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peace tipped the helmet. The translating team's Anna Karenina was reviewed in the same magazine here; James Wood discussed the Pevear and Volokhonsky War and Peace here. I don't know if that's maybe my translation, (I'm reading a different translator--Pevear & Volokhonsky) or just a case of the book being longer and more ambitious. He puts this monolingual reader to shame. See, here's the thing they don't tell you when they tell you that War and Peace is this great book that nobody reads: War and Peace is a great book that is entirely readable.
